It's one of the most common questions I hear from engaged couples. And honestly?
It's a fair question.
When you're planning a wedding, you're suddenly pricing things you've probably never had to budget for before. Venues, florals, catering, entertainment—and somewhere in the middle of it all, wedding photography.
You might receive one quote for $1,500.
Another for $3,500.
Another for $7,000.
So naturally, the question becomes:
Why is there such a huge difference?
The answer isn't simply "better cameras" or "more experience."
Wedding photography is one of the few investments you'll make that becomes more valuable over time. Long after the cake has been eaten and the flowers have faded, your photographs become the way you revisit the people, emotions, and moments that made your wedding day yours.
That's why understanding what you're paying for matters just as much as knowing the price itself.
What Does Wedding Photography Cost in Birmingham?
If you've started reaching out to photographers, you've probably noticed something pretty quickly—prices can vary a lot.
In the Birmingham and Central Alabama area, wedding photography collections commonly range anywhere from around $2,000 to $6,000 or more, depending on the photographer's experience, what's included in their collections, the number of hours of coverage, and the overall wedding experience they provide. Newer photographers may charge less as they build their portfolios, while established photographers with years of experience and luxury offerings often charge significantly more.
Public estimates for Birmingham weddings suggest many couples spend around $2,100–$3,000 on wedding photography, though every wedding—and every photographer—is different.
The truth is, there isn't a single "average" price that tells the whole story.
A photographer offering six hours of coverage with digital images will naturally price differently than someone providing a full wedding-day experience that includes timeline planning, an engagement session, a second photographer, handcrafted albums, and years of experience navigating everything from unexpected weather to fast-changing timelines.
That's why I always encourage couples to look beyond the number on the proposal.
Instead of asking,
"Which photographer is the cheapest?"
ask yourself:
"Which photographer offers the experience, guidance, and photographs I'll still treasure twenty years from now?"
Because while your wedding day lasts just one day, your photographs are one of the few things you'll return to for the rest of your life.

One of the largest factors that influences the price of wedding photography is the number of hours your photographer is with you on your wedding day. More coverage means more moments documented, but it also means additional planning, editing, and time behind the scenes.
- 8 Hours of Coverage
- Eight hours is one of the most popular choices for many couples. It usually provides enough time to capture getting ready, your ceremony, portraits, and a large portion of the reception without feeling overly rushed. For many traditional wedding days, this offers a nice balance between coverage and flexibility.
- 10 Hours of Coverage
- Ten hours allows for a much more relaxed pace. It gives your photographer time to document more of the story—from the quiet moments while you're getting ready to the excitement of your grand exit. It also creates room in your timeline for things like a first look, private vows, or sunset portraits without constantly watching the clock.
- 12 Hours of Coverage
- Twelve-hour coverage is ideal for larger weddings, multiple locations, cultural celebrations, or couples who want every part of the day documented from beginning to end. It allows your photographer to tell the complete story without feeling limited by time.

- Editing: The Work You Don't See
Wedding photography doesn't end when the reception does. Behind every final gallery are 30–40 hours spent selecting the best images, professionally editing each photograph, backing up your files, and preparing your gallery for delivery. That behind-the-scenes work is a significant part of what you're investing in when you hire a professional wedding photographer.
- Do You Need a Second Photographer?
A second photographer isn't necessary for every wedding, but there are situations where they can add tremendous value. If you're planning a larger guest count, multiple locations, or simply want as much of your day documented as possible, a second photographer may be well worth the investment. A second photographer can:

I don't believe every couple needs the most expensive photographer in Birmingham.

So...How Much Should You Budget?
If photography is one of your highest priorities, it's worth investing in someone whose work you genuinely connect with.
Not simply the lowest price.
